The tourist market will undergo changes, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, in terms of the age of tourists, since from now on it will be young people who will travel more than the rest of the generations, according to statements by the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization ( UNWTO ), Zurab Pololikashvili.This affirmation supposes an advantage for the recovery of the Dominican tourist sector, since most of the tourists who visit the Dominican Republic are between 21 and 35 years old, according to the statistics of the Central Bank ( BC ).
Of the 6,446,036 tourists who arrived at national destinations last year, 34.5% were between 21 and 35 years old, equivalent to 2,224,370 visitors, according to official records.
Likewise, last year the DR received 520,620 foreigners aged between 13 and 20, 8% of the total. While in 2018 the young tourists who arrived in the country were 2,315,728, representing 35.2% of the total visitors who came to national destinations that year.
Dominican tourism is preferred among young people if the first five months of 2020 are analyzed.
Between January and May of the current year, the country was visited by 425,146 tourists between 21 and 35 years old, equivalent to 30.5%, the highest amount by age range.
Tourist activity in the DR remained closed from mid-March to the beginning of July, after the state of emergency was established that closed the air and maritime borders to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to Diario Libre.
The UNWTO secretary considered, during a trip to some destinations in Europe, that the figures that the tourist market will move will depend on several factors, the first being the security and the evolution of the pandemic and then the speed with which the borders are opened and connectivity is restored.
