Arrival of tourists to the country falls by 75.9% in October
The arrival of foreign tourists to the Dominican Republic experienced a drop of 75.9% last October, compared to the same month last year, representing a slight recovery of the sector concerning previous months.
According to figures released this Friday by the Central Bank, 70,901 foreign tourists arrived in the Caribbean country in October, the best figure since the reopening of the airports on July 1, representing a recovery of 51.25% concerning September.
“It is important to point out that since the reopening of the international airports in July, the arrival of passengers shows a tendency towards recovery,” highlights the Central Bank in its monthly report on tourism, the main sector of the country’s economy and the one most affected by the pandemic.
After the reopening of the borders, the concentration of tourism from the United States has increased, now representing 78.4% of 221,951 non-resident foreigners who arrived in the July-October period.
In the accumulated of the year, the fall of foreign travelers is 68.6%. In comparison, there was also a decrease of 45.2% in the arrival of Dominican tourists residing abroad.
The Dominican Republic kept its borders closed due to the covid-19 between mid-March and the end of June, which caused losses in the tourism sector in the millions and led to thousands of layoffs and suspensions of contracts in hotels, bars, and restaurants.
Last September, the Dominican government launched a plan to attract foreign tourists, including offering free health insurance for travelers staying in hotels until the end of the year.
Tourism directly contributes about 7% or 8% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), so the crisis generated by the coronavirus has had a strong impact on the economy as a whole.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) calculates that the Dominican economy will collapse close to 6% this year, after having been the one that grew the most in all of Latin America in recent years.
The Dominican Central Bank believes that 2021 will be the year of recovery and that growth of around 6% can be achieved, according to calculations offered by the governor of the issuing entity, Hector Valdez Albizu, two weeks ago.

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September,
where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.
However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to a
spiel about how much I love Claudia Winkleman. In part, it’s
because she’s so silly, and in part, it’s because I’m
a huge fan of everything she presents, from Strictly
to The Traitors.
But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m
obsessed with everything she wears. I’ve spent
a fortune copying her exact outfits, from her Sister
Jane heart cutout dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that I definitely don’t
go anywhere fancy enough to wear.
Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry to
perfect her signature style. I’d describe it as soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky knits, with a fair
few sequins and prints (particularly tartan) thrown in.
I’m not alone in my reverence: there are entire Instagram accounts dedicated
to tracking down the presenter’s outfits. But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo,
two issues arise repeatedly: Claudia’s clothes are usually hugely expensive
or sold out (or both).
So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday, you’d be forgiven for assuming
it was by some top-end designer. Well, you’d be
wrong. The mini dress actually came courtesy of one of our favourite high street brands, Albaray – and you can pick it up for less than £100.
The dress is made from plush fabric with contrast
satin detailing. The velvet makes it a little festive, perfect for celebratory bashes over the next few months,
particularly when paired with white stilettos à la Claud.
But it could be just as easily dressed down with white trainers or
ballet flats and a trench for a chic office outfit, so you’ll certainly get your wear out of it.
Like all of Albaray’s products, it’s ethically made using responsible fabric

In a video shared by Vogue Beauty Secrets she candidly confessed that she used to get a
lot of lip filler and Botox – but stopped in 2018 because she felt like

she shared in the fiercely honest clip.
She added as she became emotional, ‘I just felt, like, hiding, you know.

Ariana encouraged her followers to embrace their natural looks, especially as they age.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for
entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend
in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race,
and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to
which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed
and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only
find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and
lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will
result in much greater transparency and far less big money being
injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the
rot’

independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will
need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned
the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure
the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy
must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench
effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing
cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide.
Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to

The major parties have long complained about the influence the
likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular
calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue
are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the
next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the
changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go
over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include
hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking
advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally
in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get
these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support,
not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about
being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt

While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to confirm whether Sinwar
had a kill order on the hostages, he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously,

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone
else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high
on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap. There may have
been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much
heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over
by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’
club in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year
membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room,
lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of
a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up
by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack
of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque
monsieur that tastes far better than it
ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady
of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst
into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we
would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with
butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat
this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never
enough.

took control of DC two months before production began on Joker

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a

Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with
Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April
2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have

Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid
them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was
taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair
backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit
near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze
of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is
broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud
soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes
far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of
the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and
charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides
whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises
them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each,
is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be
available to rent from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of
Warner Bros. investment into the film, as per Variety.
The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its
theatrical run’ according to the publication.
The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters —
though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally
ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film
does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel,
while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two
months before production began on Joker 2 in December
2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio
but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With
all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with
Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April
2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at
a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which
would have cost around 20 per cent less.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not
want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to
bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include
Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret
deals were done in private luxury first exploded into
the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars
wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had
even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline,
Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and
John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s
Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were
certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge
member – revealed a politically charged remark made
within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the
bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned
on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing
Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt,
and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate
frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas
chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also
a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers,
and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what
some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business
leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey
reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and
confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce,
Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed
confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be personally invited by the
airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to
mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive
club have included Pauline Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a
prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell
Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud
and bribery offences).

The report noted that politicians declaring membership
of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs
of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and
Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal,
Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership
is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the
country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only
lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the
airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest
registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives
and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades
‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is
transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and
Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister
and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries
Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is
still veiled in secrecy.

‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the
public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a
plane?’

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as
he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal
travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr
Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and
upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas
chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied
it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline … I had the same relationship with him that
I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special

landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had
been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or
deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether
he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock
competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s
Lounge member.

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he
would liaise personally with the former airline boss
for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce
while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or
his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included
overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for
work purposes and all were ‘declared in the
appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a
regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the
phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would
be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else
because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas
Chairman’s Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls –
we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of
the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how
confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE
airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’
to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing
to do with the decision.
Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through the Prime
Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had
seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas
lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received
from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled
together.

‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens
of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades to business class?
The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister and
prime minister under a cloud.
‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the
perks of public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that
the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate
while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by
sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court
in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible
hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a
bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

Dean Penson, 41, fell sick on the island of Phuket, on the southern tip of
the country, a few weeks ago – and doctors now fear he may
have the deadly blood cancer.
But alongside his terrifying prognosis, the labourer has faced ‘horrific’ conditions at the local government-run Vachira Phuket Hospital as he didn’t take out insurance.
Friends say the infirmary has puddles of blood on the floor, needles
strewn on the ground and people dying just feet away from him each day.
Dean’s best friend Ben Page, 42, who has been with him during his stay
at the ‘Third World’ open clinic said they will need to find around £9,750 for
the medical bills and the flight to get him home.

the country, a few weeks ago and doctors now fear he may have the deadly blood cancer

‘There’s blood everywhere, there’s needles everywhere’
Ben said of the hospital: ‘It’s pretty horrendous, the
conditions are so bad. There’s blood everywhere, there’s needles everywhere.
‘It feels like the “Third World”.
‘There’s blood all over Dean’s bed. There has been blood on the
cover since he got there. There’s no toilet roll, you just wash
with a hose.
‘And the nurses have messed up so many times. They have pulled a needle out of him,
and the blood just pours out.
‘Three people have died next to him over the last three or four days and there are no curtains.
The machines are on all night so he can’t sleep.’
Dean, from Southend-on-Sea, had originally flown out to Phuket for a few weeks with
a group of mates on November 6.
Ben said he’d urged Dean to take out insurance before leaving, but he was
worried that he wouldn’t get covered at a reasonable rate as he’d previously broken both his
knees.
But Dean began to feel unwell on about November 15 before his friends decided to rush
him to a hospital near the bustling island’s old town four days later.

Doctors then discovered that he had an extremely low blood count,
which meant that he had to undergo around 20 transfusions over the next ten days.
Ben, who briefly returned to the UK before coming back to be with his friend,
said they suspect he may have leukaemia.
He said: ‘He’s just got worse and worse – he’s really anaemic.
We’ve been best mates since we were 15. It was just horrendous to see him like this.
‘He couldn’t see well out of his eyes because he had a haemorrhage behind them.
That was causing him to bleed from them.
‘His bloods are just so low, which could be leukaemia, but I’m not
really sure. He’s had 18 to 20 bags of blood and platelets.
His platelets are just totally depleted.
‘But it’s just horrendous at the hospital. We wouldn’t treat an animal in a vets this way.
‘At one point they smashed his bed against the wall,
but he’s a high risk of brain haemorrhage. It’s
been horrible seeing him like this.’

Father of two Ben, who runs the Combat Charity Challenge
business, said they were hopeful that Dean would be declared fit enough to fly over the next few days.
But he said that he still faces a startling hospital bill when he returns home,
with little hope of being able to pay it off.
He said: ‘The hospital has so far charged around £5,000.
‘He’s obviously run up a bill here that he can’t afford to pay.
And he’s going to have to go A&E when he gets back.
‘They are just pumping him full of blood at the moment in the hope that we
can bring him home.’
A GoFundMe account set up for Dean has so far raised more than £3,000
of its £9,750 goal.

Londonderry House, like many of London’s great houses, was built for entertaining.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, most aristocrats and others who lived on their estates
for much of the year had a town house to which they migrated for ‘the Season’ – those summer months filled with balls and parties, when débutantes were presented at court and launched into ‘society’
in the hope of making a splendid marriage.

These houses were as magnificent as their owners could manage.
Built and decorated by the most talented of the age, they were
sumptuously furnished – walls were hung with silk, damask and wonderful paintings – and often embellished with marble statuary.
The mustard-yellow drawing rooms of Londonderry House were filled with blue Sèvres vases and gold plate; in the entrance hall stood
a Canova statue of Theseus and the Minotaur (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum).
Suites of rooms, with a ballroom at one end, could be flung open for entertaining.
Georgiana Cavendish (1757-1806), a lover of gambling –

Today most of these palatial mansions have been pulled down or turned into blocks of flats.
With their disappearance went their furnishings,
objets and paintings. But what their wonderful rooms looked like can be seen in London: Lost
Interiors, a book compiled from superb black-and-white photographs of these amazing houses, some of which belonged to
aristocratic landowners, others to plutocrats or society figures.
The drawing room, Grosvenor House
Most of the townhouses – those used for the Season rather than permanent residences – were clustered round Park Lane, Mayfair or on Piccadilly, like Devonshire House.
Here once lived the fifth Duke of Devonshire and his wife Georgiana (pronounced jaw-janer), whom
he had married in 1774 when she was just 17. She was a celebrated beauty who quickly became
a leader of fashion, famous for her towering hairstyles three
feet high, decorated with birds, fruit, even ships in sail.
The couple spent 20 years in a ménage à trois with Lady
Elizabeth Foster, Georgiana’s close friend, who was also the
Duke’s mistress. Meanwhile, Georgiana’s gambling led to mounting debts:
on her death in 1806 they were found to be the equivalent of £4 million in today’s money.
The rich, restless second Duke of Westminster, AKA Bendor, in his 20s
Another Park Lane mansion was Grosvenor House, belonging
to the dukes of Westminster and one of the largest in London,
as befitted the family’s status and wealth (their huge fortune
came from their ownership of Mayfair). Bendor, the blond and
handsome second duke (1879-1953) was known as one
of the richest men in England, lavishing jewels on his mistresses, chief among whom
was Coco Chanel.

yachts). All were kept ready: cars fuelled, silver polished, servants in livery.
But after the First World War, during which
Grosvenor House had been requisitioned as a hospital, land prices had
risen so high that even for Bendor it had become uneconomic and he sold it.
It was demolished in 1927 and the Grosvenor House Hotel was
built on the site.

At the other end of the scale was 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton from 1940 to
1975. Superbly furnished by this brilliant photographer, it was
described loftily by the diarist Chips Channon (for whom the word ‘snob’ could have been invented – in his
diaries he declares, ‘I am only really happy with royalty’) as ‘a tiny
but super-attractive snuffbox of a house’. Beaton, himself
no social slouch, ran him close: at his parties the women often wore stiletto heels, which pitted the floor, and later he would point them
out, saying, ‘That’s Princess Marina, that’s Julie Andrews, that’s Vivien Leigh…’

Beaton’s near neighbour in Pelham Place, until
the mid-60s, was the great stage designer Oliver Messel.
When Messel’s nephew Tony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord Snowdon)
became engaged to Princess Margaret, Messel laid on a lunch,
asking the Princess if there was anyone she would particularly like to meet.
She said she had always greatly admired the witty cabaret star Bea Lillie and so Messel invited her.
What none of them knew was that Bea Lillie had a drinking habit.
At the end of lunch she slid quietly under the table and was carried upstairs to sleep it off.
Tony and the Princess took their leave and Messel rushed
back to his studio, where he was busy with fittings for Elizabeth Taylor, only to be interrupted
by a telephone call.

‘It’s Kensington Police Station here, Mr Messel,’ said
the voice at the other end. ‘We thought you ought to know that
there’s a naked woman on your balcony, throwing bottles at everyone who passes by.’
Among the last of these fascinating residences to survive was the aforementioned Londonderry House.
Throughout the 20s and 30s it had seen receptions and balls, hosted by
the Londonderrys for their four daughters and two granddaughters.
When eventually it had to go, in July 1962, a farewell party for 300
was given by Alastair, the 9th Marquess. Live sounds were supplied by a blues band featuring a
swaggering young Mick Jagger, no less – presaging the rise of a whole
new swinging London generation.
