Cotuí, DR.- The Dominican Republic aims to set a new Guinness record by creating the world’s largest majarete during the 2024 Tourism Fair (FESTUR) in Cotuí, Sánchez Ramírez Province, from October 31 to November 4. The giant majarete, a traditional corn-based dessert, is expected to serve around 11,000 people on November 2 during a performance by merengue singer José Peña Suazo, who has been named “ambassador” of the event.
FESTUR 2024 seeks to promote Sánchez Ramírez as a prime ecotourism destination, featuring activities such as cultural showcases, international guest participation (Japan), and special appearances by regional representatives. The event is backed by notable figures, including Ricardo de los Santos, Senator for Sánchez Ramírez, and commercial partners like Nestlé and Industria San Miguel.
The initiative has strong community support, including contributions from the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA), which sees this record-setting attempt as a way to enhance the province’s gastronomic and cultural identity. FESTUR organizers also recognized Peña Suazo as “El Cacique de FESTUR” for his contributions to Dominican culture and local heritage.
