show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by

This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing

Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to
work a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy
when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce
are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by
former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which
included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades
that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’
Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time,
an offer you simply didn’t refuse. Providing,
of course, that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there
are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to
be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other
hand, went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit
near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under
the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a
loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the
background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate
entirely via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought
to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the
noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst
into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’,
we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber
art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra
caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if
I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with
caviar. One taste is never enough.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like
the return of the Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially
the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter
sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of
a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive
patterns with multiple colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales
(later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate
Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for
Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to a spiel about how much I
love Claudia Winkleman. In part, it’s because she’s so silly,
and in part, it’s because I’m a huge fan of everything she presents, from Strictly to The Traitors.
But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m obsessed with everything she wears.
I’ve spent a fortune copying her exact outfits, from her Sister Jane heart cutout dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that I definitely don’t go anywhere fancy

Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry to
perfect her signature style. I’d describe it as soft goth: lots of black,
velvet and chunky knits, with a fair few sequins and prints (particularly tartan) thrown in. I’m not alone
in my reverence: there are entire Instagram accounts
dedicated to tracking down the presenter’s outfits.
But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo, two issues arise repeatedly: Claudia’s clothes are
usually hugely expensive or sold out (or both).
So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday, you’d be forgiven for assuming it was by some top-end designer.
Well, you’d be wrong. The mini dress actually came courtesy of one of our favourite high street brands,
Albaray – and you can pick it up for less than £100.
The dress is made from plush fabric with contrast satin detailing.
The velvet makes it a little festive, perfect for
celebratory bashes over the next few months, particularly when paired with white stilettos à
la Claud. But it could be just as easily dressed down with
white trainers or ballet flats and a trench for
a chic office outfit, so you’ll certainly get your wear out of it.
Like all of Albaray’s products, it’s ethically made using responsible fabric and sent via a carbon-neutral shipping method, so you can feel good about the
dress’s eco-credentials as well as how it looks. It’s currently in stock in a few sizes online (and in certain John Lewis
concessions) but like most things Claudia wears, it won’t stick around long.

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days
after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.
Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where
Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and
labelled a “sham” by the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls, billed
as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s
1990 independence from South africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of
batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters
still in the queues, it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time, giving
Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:
30 am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to
vote as he had exams the next day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said.
But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”
The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties with some calling for
a halt in the electoral process.
Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus who
represents the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.
Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which has
ruled since 1990.
Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the first woman to
lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.
“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,”
said voter Ensley Engermund, who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite trying four different polling stations.
“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old security agent.
“It was to get people frustrated.”

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum,
and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go,
‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is
going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with
her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s
how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of
the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough
for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half
that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining
the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive
as people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs
or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it
was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the
musical elements were a lot of fun.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the
two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely
trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing
that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a
non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both
of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely
dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly
few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to
perform well on occasion.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner
of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate –
carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are

with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right
Liberal Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime
minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from
former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents
and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which
was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200,
which has given campaign funding to some teal

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at
its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member
lower house – the highest proportion of non major party MPs since
Federation in 1901.

Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday
said it would be filing a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United States for its IQOS ILUMA product in October.
The company at its investor day said that while the PMTA timeline remains “hard to predict”, it
expects the launch of the ILUMA heated tobacco units towards the second half of
its three-year forecast period of 2024 to 2026.
IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them,
a process the company says potentially results in fewer

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a
complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country
following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the
year in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was
positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for
more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by
2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier
alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May
2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring
lobbyists across a host of key U.S. states ahead of
the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed
U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives approval
to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025, he continued.
“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding
launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity
analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine
products was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1
billion in net revenues to come from sales of such
products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN,
Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of
big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for
revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets
for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues
there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.
