Santo Domingo will have a Convention Bureau

The non-profit entity will group different sectors and will have the objective of promoting the promotion of the capital city as the Caribbean’s leading destination in meeting tourism

With the objective of promoting the promotion of the capital city of Santo Domingo as the Caribbean’s leading destination in the Tourism of Meetings, Incentive trips, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE segment), the Santo Domingo Convention Bureau will begin operating, an entity nonprofit that will group the different sectors of that tourist segment and that will function as a single window of information and advice when conducting an event.

“Statistics show that the MICE tourist spends up to four times more than the holiday tourist and their trips do not respond to seasonality; hence the importance of having this bureau to project Santo Domingo as an ideal destination for international conferences and congresses, generating more business and more profitable for the city, ”said Magaly Toribio, Marketing Advisor of the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic ( MITUR).

The Bureau of Conventions will be a point of consultation and initial reference for any person or organization that wants to develop a meeting or congress in Santo Domingo, whether they are organizers of groups or events, professional associations, corporations or companies.

“In addition to developing marketing strategies and promotion of the destination, the entity will provide information and assistance on the attractions and offer of tourist services available to the city: meeting facilities, accommodation, transportation, catering, translation, stand builders and lists from local suppliers, such as professional congress organizers (OPCs) and tourism agencies, among others, ”said Amelia Molina, director of congresses and incentives at MITUR.

Another of the central functions of the bureau will be to serve as a liaison between international planners and local institutions or associations, making useful and valuable contacts available when conducting an event, such as scientists, academics, high-level professionals and directors of associations, among others.

Through all these actions aimed at increasing the number of events held in Santo Domingo, the Bureau of Conventions will help boost the economic development of the city.

Regarding its operation, the entity will group as members or affiliates different actors of the MICE segment, both from the public and private sectors (government ministries and agencies, hotels, restaurants, fairgrounds, airports, convention centers, tour operators, cameras of commerce, etc.), who will contribute an annual fee for the administrative management of the organization.

Due to its excellent air and land connectivity, convention centers equipped with the most modern technology, first-class hotel infrastructure and tourist attractions for all tastes, Santo Domingo is consolidated every year as a MICE destination in the Caribbean, a leadership that will be enhanced with the new Bureau of Conventions.
