UNWTO is optimistic: “Tourism will enter normal normality soon”

In two, three or four months, the new normality will be overcome and tourism will enter “normal normality”. This is how optimistic the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Zurab Pololikashvili, was on a visit to the Canary Islands on the occasion of his tour to revive world tourism after the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in Europe.

“We have to be more positive and have more confidence. Spain and the Canary Islands in particular are open and safe territories ”, he commented in a meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the Minister of Tourism, Yaiza Castilla.

The UNWTO Secretary General highlighted the need to boost international tourism with improvements in connectivity, a criterion shared by Minister Maroto, who, on the other hand, was not as optimistic about the recovery of the industry.

For her part, Maroto explained that “the reactivation will be gradual, we closely follow the coronavirus outbreaks that have been emerging during the last weeks in different parts of the country.” In this sense, she recalled that the highest priority is the health security of tourist destinations, giving as an example the “effective” management of the Canary Islands.
