Tourism in the Dominican Republic experienced the second best month of February in its entire history with the arrival of 566,235 passengers, which represents a growth of 268% compared to 2021, maintaining the recovery trend that this sector has had since September last year.
The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, presented, as usual, the results for the month of February accompanied by the Vice Minister Jaqueline Mora and the President of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (ASONAHORES), Rafael Blanco Tejera.
Collado explained that in just two months the Dominican Republic has accumulated more than 1 million 100 thousand tourists, while in 2021 the figure was 400 thousand, which represents a growth of 271% compared to last year.
“Tourist flow levels continue to remain at pre-pandemic levels in the Dominican Republic, while most destinations in Central America and the Caribbean are not even close to achieving such a recovery, which shows once again that the The measures taken by the Tourism Cabinet headed by President Luis Abinader have been the correct ones and we are still on the right track,” said Minister Collado during his presentation.
Deputy Minister Jacqueline Mora explained that of the non-residents who visited the country, some 474,000 were foreigners and 92,000 Dominicans and that the continental distribution of foreign tourists corresponds to 60% from North America, 30% from Europe, 9% from Latin America. and 1% from the rest of the world.
He also explained that 6 out of 10 tourists stayed in hotels, which had an average occupancy of over 75%, with an average of 7 nights per tourist, with Romana/Bayahibe being the area with the highest occupancy with more than 90%. average, followed by Bávaro Punta Cana with 79% and Sosua and Cabarete with 72%.
In February 2022, 4,300 flights from 130 different airlines arrived in the country, with Punta Cana being the busiest airport and La Romana airport being the fastest growing. While by sea, 93 cruise operations were registered in which 169,000 non-residents arrived in the country, the main port being Amber Cove, in Maimón, Puerto Plata.
