MITUR launches tender for rehabilitation of streets of Ciudad Colonial
With this intervention, 10 thousand square meters of sidewalk are rehabilitated for the enjoyment of inhabitants and visitors
SANTO DOMINGO.- The Ministry of Tourism, with resources from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), launched an international public tender for the rehabilitation works of the public spaces of the streets prioritized within the framework of the Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo (PIDTUCCSD).
This tender represents a comprehensive recovery of some 4,700 meters of street sections, at an estimated cost of 24 million dollars. This intervention is projected to last 30 months, beginning at the end of this year.
The rehabilitation works will be carried out simultaneously in two lots; one begins on Las Damas street, in a South-North direction, and a second lot contemplates starting on Las Mercedes street, from Hostos street to Palo Hincado, in an East-West direction.
These improvements include the undergrounding of electricity and communication service networks, the substitution of drinking water, sewage and rainwater networks. Likewise, it includes the visual and functional transformation of vehicular and pedestrian circulation surfaces, with the renewal of paving materials and street furniture.
He highlights that, with these interventions, the Colonial City will gain 10,000 square meters of sidewalk, eliminate visual pollution and stimulate architectural appreciation of the Historic Center, for the enjoyment of its inhabitants and visitors.
It also favors the execution of the Urban Mobility Plan, which implements more sustainable modes of travel, such as walking, the use of bicycles and efficient electric public transport, compatible with economic growth, social cohesion and environmental protection.

About Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo
The main objective of the program is to revitalize the Colonial City of Santo Domingo in its urban, economic and cultural tourism aspects, through the recovery of public spaces and historical monuments; improving living conditions for residents; the development of local economies and the strengthening of the management of the area. This is executed with a US$90 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
To achieve these objectives, the program establishes four components: consolidation of the cultural tourism offer; improvement of the habitability conditions of the residents of the Colonial City; development of local economies and strengthening of tourism, cultural and urban management in the area.
The program will benefit residents and merchants of the Colonial City, as well as domestic and foreign tourists who visit the area.
The Ministry of Tourism is the Executing Agency of the Program, acting through the Program Coordination Unit (UCP) and in coordination with the City Council of the National District and the Ministry of Culture.
