JAC highlights rapid recovery of tourism before ICAO

The delegation of the Dominican Republic that participated in the 41st session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), held in Montreal, Canada, highlighted the rapid recovery of tourism in the country, affected by the Covid-19 pandemic .

The president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) and head of the Dominican delegation, José Marte Piantini, said that said recovery was achieved by virtue of the implementation of the recommendations developed by the Special Team for the Recovery of Aviation (CART) and the ICAO Council.

The official indicated that, since September 2021, “we have exceeded our figures compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic and that by April 2022, we maintained the movement of passengers by air with historical figures; managing in August to break the record of visits of tourists of all the history of RD”.

Marte Piantini was accompanied at the event by Héctor Porcella, interim director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC); Víctor Pichardo, executive director of the Airport Department; Floreal T. Suárez Martínez, General Director of the Specialized Body for Airport Security and Civil Aviation (CESAC); the country’s ambassador to ICAO, Julio Peña Guzmán, and Nasim Antonio Yapor Alba, alternate representative of the Dominican Republic to ICAO.

In the statement presented by the Dominican delegation, the importance of continuing to strengthen international civil aviation is also highlighted.

In addition, continue prioritizing the protection of the environment, through the implementation of the Carbon Compensation and Reduction Plan for International Aviation (CORSIA), of which the Dominican Republic is a part since its pilot plan.

It is recalled that CORSIA is a global plan to reduce CO2 emissions from international aviation adopted by ICAO in 2018, in which the Member States committed to participate from the pilot phase, which began in January 2021.

It is an important element to complement the basket of measures that ICAO is promoting to reduce the climate impact of flying.
