Aerodom agrees to improve AILA baggage handlers’ conditions
Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) and Airport Passenger Service (APS) reached an agreement with the group of baggage handlers who have historically offered services at the José Francisco Peña Gómez International Airport of the Americas (AILA), in order to improve their working conditions and raise the level of services received by passengers transiting through this terminal.
The agreement, reached through the mediation of the Airport Department, establishes that as of March 15, 2023, APS will manage the baggage carts and offer personalized luggage handling services at the AILA, offering an employment contract to all the baggage handlers already operating at the airport. It also contemplates attractive benefits and working conditions.
As part of the improvements to the service, a clear and transparent rate will be established and published on the web page and on posters around the airport terminal so that travelers will know in advance the cost of accessing the baggage carts or opting for the personalized baggage handler.
As is the case at major airports around the world, the AILA will have SKYKART, the high quality and convenient automated luggage cart dispenser, which incorporates technological solutions to the service offered at the terminal.
Carlos Núñez, Aerodom’s Director of Extra Aeronautical Business said that “thanks to this agreement, we will significantly improve the service we offer to the millions of passengers we receive, who will have a baggage management system that meets the highest standards. At the same time, the nearly 200 baggage handlers who operate at the AILA will be hired with competitive salaries, medical insurance and greater protection”.
“With the arrival of APS in the country, new technologies will be introduced that will make it possible to offer a much more efficient and secure service, both for travelers and for the personnel who provide this service,” he added.
He explained that the alliance with this renowned international company with a proven track record in airport services will have a positive impact for all travelers.
APS benefits for baggage handlers
APS, thanks to the efforts made together with Aerodom and the Airport Department, offered active baggage handlers who offer their services at the AILA an attractive package of benefits that includes indefinite labor contracts, with guaranteed employment during the first two years of management. They will also offer an economic incentive, medical insurance, life insurance, bonus and annual performance bonuses.
Those porters who, due to their age, physical condition or health, do not wish to continue working under the APS umbrella, will receive an extraordinary social contribution in appreciation of their years of work that seeks to assist the most vulnerable.
