Dominican Republic encourages the construction of hotels, facing the pandemic covid-19
The Tourism Promotion Council (Confotur) of the Dominican Republic approved last April 29 the development of 862 new hotel rooms, representing an investment of over 107 million dollars. All this, in the midst of the coronavirus crisis that has practically completely paralyzed the tourism sector.
Hotel projects will be developed in the country’s capital, Santo Domingo, and in the provinces of La Altagracia, La Romana and María Trinidad Sánchez. At the meeting on Wednesday, Confotur also approved 11 other requests, of different types, for the development and construction of projects that are already underway.
In this regard, the Tourism Minister, Francisco Javier García, pointed out that these investments reflect the confidence of businessmen in the Caribbean destination. «Million dollar investments like these, in the midst of this situation, reconfirm the confidence of businessmen and make clear why we are the leaders of tourism in the Caribbean region,» he said.
At the same time, he considered that these investments represent recognition of the Dominican executive’s way of dealing with the health crisis. «When all this happens we will meet again and the country will resume its position in world tourism,» Garcia predicted.
It should be noted that Confotur is made up, in addition to the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), by representatives of the Ministries of Environment, Culture, Finance and the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (ASONAHORES).
