Apordom will invest 10 million dollars to open two ports and attract cruise ships
The Dominican Port Authority (Apordom) plans to invest in the port of San Pedro de Macorís an approximate amount of 10 million dollars (about RD $ 600 million) for the fitting out of two docks, abandoned for more than 20 years.
Currently, there are six docks in operation at said port, of which four are operating. “This is what would make it fully operational. If we have a port that has six docks, if four of those six work, obviously 33% of the port is not being used, ”said the director of the institution, Jean Luis Rodríguez.
He explained that the plans for the port are to turn it into a pilot project, with a view to bringing the ports managed by the State to the level of concessioned ports.
“The ports of the State are in prehistory, totally outdated, zero technology and modernity and it is the gap that we propose to close,” he said.
The official indicated that they are conducting feasibility studies for the entry of tourist boats.
“At some point, cruises were received and it was an important time and they are the aspirations of the Petromacorisanos. We have made a commitment to evaluate the conditions to see if they are suitable for tourism, or to see other possibilities ”, he stressed.
At that time, among the few companies operating in the port are Pemex, Ferquido and Panama. Only 3 million pesos generated activity at the terminal in the last month, said his director. The idea is that the investment being contemplated will expand the activity in the work, which was visited last September by President Luis Abinader during his visit to the province.
