250 destinations worldwide have obtained the Safe Travels seal from the WTTC
The success of the seal shows the importance of global coordination to help rebuild and revive the international travel and tourism sector
Following its launch in May last year, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Safe Travels seal has been awarded to 250 destinations around the world.
The badge was developed to help restore confidence in travelers and aims to revive the global travel and tourism sector, which has been severely affected by the pandemic. It has been awarded to various destinations, such as: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Guatemala, Belize, Kenya, Egypt, Portugal, Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, United Kingdom, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Fiji, Indonesia , The Philippines, Ethiopia, as well as different entities in Mexico, among others.
The seal, now recognized globally, enables business and leisure travelers to distinguish destinations around the world that have adopted standardized health and hygiene protocols so they can experience “safe travel.”
This WTTC project was endorsed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and the launch of global protocols to reclaim the travel and tourism sector has been adopted by more than 200 CEOs, including some of the leading tour groups of the world.
Gloria Guevara, president and CEO of the WTTC, said: “We are proud to see the great and growing reception that the Safe Travels stamp has had. Today there are already 250 destinations around the world that have proudly obtained this global distinction, which is testament to the hard work that has been done to make this initiative work, both for destinations and tourists ”.
The president of the World Travel and Tourism Council indicated that: “As the global launch of the vaccine accelerates and travel restrictions are relaxed in the coming weeks, the seal will be a key component for the recovery of the sector, through of the restoration of the confidence of the traveler ”.
He also noted that the success of the seal shows the importance of global coordination to help rebuild and reactivate the international travel and tourism sector. Destinations with the seal will benefit from allowing travelers to recognize that they have adopted global protocols, encouraging the return of “safe travel” around the world.
“We are finally beginning to take a step toward the new normal of a post-COVID world, and it is an honor to lead the way for coordinated recovery efforts globally,” said Guevara Manzo.
The WTTC protocols were designed following the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and taking into account the best practices of the members of the Council.
According to the WTTC Economic Impact Report 2020, during 2019, Travel & Tourism was responsible for one in 10 jobs (330 million in total), made a contribution of 10.3% to world GDP and generated one in four of all the new jobs.
