Film law presented as an impulse for Puerto Plata to become a film destination
The Association of Hotels, Restaurants and Tourism Enterprises of the North (Ashonorte) and the General Directorate of Cinema (DGCINE) presented Law 108-10 as an opportunity to promote the development of the film industry in the province of Puerto Plata.
In this regard, Mariana Vargas, director of DGCINE, highlighted the importance of the film industry in the economic and social development of the people, and encouraged entrepreneurs to take advantage of the benefits granted by the film law to all those who invest in the seventh art.
He highlighted that within the law there are two notable articles: Article 34, which allows any legal entity that invests in cinematographic works or feature films approved by DGCINE, to deduct 100% of the actual value invested from income tax; and Article 39, which grants a tax credit equivalent to 25% of all expenses incurred by any natural or legal person that produces Dominican or foreign cinematographic and audiovisual works. Said credit may be used in its affidavit or be transferred in favor of any natural or juridical person for the same purposes.
Carlos Rodoli, president of Ashonorte, encouraged support for the booming industry, which has become an excellent tool for the promotion of destinations.
“Puerto Plata has all the conditions to become the first film destination in the country, because in addition to having beautiful natural scenery, it also has trained personnel to assist in any type of film productions,” he added.
He recalled that the meeting with businessmen, film producers and fans of the seventh art, is the result of the agreement made last year with the company ADN Films, with which the first bachata festival was held in the Dominican Republic and whose ultimate goal is to make a film documenting the trajectory of this musical genre, and which aims to be filmed mostly in Puerto Plata.
“Our efforts, from the presidency of Ashonorte, is to convert the tourist pole of Puerto Plata into a successful film destination, which will bring multiple benefits both in terms of tourism promotion and in increasing the economy of the area,” concluded Rodolí.
