ISAP2023: The 15th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific: “Accelerating Sustainability Transitions in Asia and the Pacific: The Transformative Potential of Integration, Inclusion and Localisation”

TOKYO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#IGES–The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) will host the 15th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2023). This year, the Plenary Sessions will be held on Tuesday, 19 December 2023 at Pacifico Yokohama as a hybrid event, with participation in-person and online. In addition, the Thematic Tracks will be held online from October 2023 to January 2024.
ISAP has been organised in collaboration with many stakeholders over the years and has grown into a significant and exciting event where experts, international organisations, government, business and NGO representatives active in Japan and across the wider Asia-Pacific gather to engage in diverse discussions on sustainable development in the region. The overall theme of ISAP2023 is “Accelerating Sustainability Transitions in Asia and the Pacific: The Transformative Potential of Integration, Inclusion and Localisation”, and discussions will focus on these three transformative dynamics to bring about advances in the sustainability agenda in the region.
Three Transformative Dynamics
1. Integration: Maximising synergies and minimising trade-offs across climate, biodiversity and circular economy are essential to advancing the sustainability agenda.
2. Inclusion: Empowering all actors, including those currently marginalised or disadvantaged, to help shape the future they want can also inject much needed momentum into the sustainability agenda.
3. Localisation: Tailoring solutions to relevant contexts can foster ownership of, and support for, the sustainability agenda.
ISAP is significantly renewing its format this year. While the hybrid format of the plenary sessions will remain the same as in previous years, the online thematic track sessions, which until last year were held over several consecutive days following the plenary sessions, will be split over several days before and after the plenary sessions. Moreover, we will be launching ISAP Plus, which will function as a format for side events at significant international proceedings or conferences throughout the year. Detailed information and schedule of the plenary sessions, thematic tracks and ISAP Plus will be periodically shared via the newly-launched ISAP e-newsletter.

About International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP)
As the world’s most populous region, Asia needs to be at the forefront of efforts to achieve a rapid transformation. Held annually since 2009, ISAP has been organised in collaboration with various stakeholders over the years and has grown into a significant and exciting event where experts across the Asia-Pacific gather to engage in diverse discussions on sustainable development in the region. ISAP has two major objectives — first, it facilitates information-sharing and discussion among a broad range of interested stakeholders, deepening mutual trust and strengthening cooperation. Secondly, the forum gives the general public a chance to discover the progress being made in the global debate on environmental issues, and introduces them to the latest research trends. ISAP encourages wide-ranging collaborative efforts to create the groundwork for building a sustainable society. In particular, it provides a forum for practical information-gathering and networking, targeting local government officials who deal with environmental issues, corporate officials carrying out research and collecting the latest information in investor relations or sustainability departments, as well as media representatives pursuing the impact of international discussions on Japan and reporting on the gap between Japan and the rest of the world.
About the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES)
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is a collaborative research and outreach organisation working to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, resilient, shared and inclusive Asia-Pacific region, both across borders and within the world at large. Our strategic research and operations are defined by a mission to drive action on the world’s most critical environmental and social challenges through the delivery of trusted expertise on sustainable development and resilience. IGES operates as an agent of change and together with key international organisations, governments, academic institutes, business and civil society leaders, we seek to foster a world where planetary boundaries are fully respected, a green economy is flexibly implemented, and the well-being of people is steadily improved. In so doing we emphasise workable and inspired approaches to cross-cutting global development issues ranging from climate change, natural resources and ecosystems management, and sustainable consumption and production, among many others. The Institute was established in 1998 with support from the Japanese government and Kanagawa Prefecture and maintains its international headquarters in Hayama, Japan. With offices and local centres in Tokyo, Kansai, Kitakyushu, Beijing, Bangkok and New Delhi, IGES supports a regional and global network for ground-breaking sustainable development research and practice.
