Leon opens Reinventions exhibition at the International Contemporary Art Fair (ARCO)
Madrid, Spain. January 2024.- Fundación Eduardo León Jimenes, Casa de América and Centro León formally opened the exhibition Reinvenciones, la ubicuidad de las identidades en lo fotográfico desde el Caribe (Reinventions, the ubiquity of identities in photography from the Caribbean) in this city.
The opening ceremony was led by María Amalia León, president of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation and Centro León; Luis Prados Covarrubias, director of Programming at Casa de América; Juan Bolívar Díaz, ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the Kingdom of Spain; María Elena Aguayo, executive director of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation; Luis Felipe Rodríguez, manager of Cultural Programs at Centro León; Sara Hermann, chief curator at Centro León; Laura Bisonó and Joel Butler Fernández, curators of the exhibition.
The exhibition explores the origins of contemporary Dominican photography, and the selection of works reveals the contributions of this artistic expression in the search for the possible components of a new national imaginary.
Luis Prados Covarrubias, Director of Programming at Casa de América, gave the welcoming remarks and pointed out the importance of the collaboration between the two institutions.
Dr. María Amalia León, president of Fundación Eduardo León Jimenes and Centro León, emphasized that: “This exhibition invites us to experience the memory of an insular and continental space through a series of photographs that tear the membranes of time.
The exhibition, which is articulated from the Eduardo León Jimenes Collection of Visual Arts, presents 74 works by 22 Caribbean artists: Alejandro Cartagena, Nicolás Derné, Polibio Díaz, Patricia Encarnación, Diana López, Joiri Minaya, Citlally Miranda, Eliazar Ortiz Roa, Raquel Paiewonsky, Andrés Ramírez Gaviria, Roberto Stephenson, Juan Alfonso Zapata, Domingo Batista, José Antonio Ramírez, Julio González, Max Pou, Pedro José Borrell, Pedro Nicasio, Santiago -Chaguito- Morel, Víctor -Cuqui- Cabrera, Wifredo García and La colectiva Juana y si no su hermana.
After the formal opening, the curators of the exhibition conducted a guided tour with the participation of a large group of personalities from the world of Spanish culture, museum directors and specialists, as well as Dominicans living in Madrid.
