Passenger traffic in Latin America and the Caribbean decreased 82.7% in August
The Air Transport Association of Latin America and the Caribbean announced today that the airlines operating in the Latin American and Caribbean market transported 6.3 million passengers
ALTA announced today that airlines operating in the Latin American and Caribbean market carried 6.3 million passengers in August, 82.7% less, or -30,452,887 fewer passengers, compared to the previous year. Traffic (RPK) decreased 84.8% and capacity (ASK) decreased 80.4%, bringing the load factor to 64.1%, 18.8 percentage points less than in 2019.
1,055,352 passengers traveled to and from Latin America and the Caribbean in August, 90.8% less than the previous year (see table 2). Traffic (RPK) decreased 88.4% and capacity (ASK) decreased 88.3%, bringing load factor to 61.2%.
In this context, domestic traffic in the region represented 83% of the total, with the markets of Brazil and Mexico showing some recovery compared to 2019 levels.
In Mexico, domestic traffic decreased 55.5% and in Brazil 72%. This marks a clear recovery trend in the two most important markets in the region that, although it is still far from the levels of 2019, is seeing a lesser decrease month by month.
However, international traffic, both intra-regional and extra-regional, remains stagnant since in August the restriction measures for international travelers were still in force in the vast majority of countries in the region.
However, the volume of international traffic is expected to show an improvement in September, as several countries in the region lifted international restrictions, such as Colombia, Costa Rica and El Salvador.
