President Abinader inaugurates fishing pier in Boca Chica that will boost tourism

The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, inaugurated the Boca Chica fishing pier, an initiative that will allow the renewal and promotion of fishing activity in the area, in addition to boosting the local economy and promoting the creation of new sources of employment.

The work, which was carried out after 20 years of waiting, included the recovery and expansion of the old Boca Chica pier, where from now on more than one hundred boats will be able to dock, directly impacting more than 300 fishermen.

The president pointed out that, in general, it will impact workers in the fishing, tourism and local commerce sectors and that the real impact of this work will reach thousands of people.

He indicated that with the port it will be possible to expand fishing capacity, there will be a better organization in the guild and visitors to tourist areas will be able to continue enjoying quality fishing, with the best products, always fresh, coming directly from the sea.

“In addition, an access road for fishermen has been built, the rescue of the maneuvering yard has been completed, as well as a specific area for cleaning marine products, an office and an exclusive surveillance area,” added Abinader.

The president said that the project is part of the National Plan for the Construction and Rehabilitation of Fishing Docks that the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), headed by Jean Luis Rodríguez, has proposed to carry out for the entire country.

He explained that through this initiative important works are being undertaken in different parts of the country for the enhancement of Dominican fishing areas, such as in Sabana de la Mar, Miches, Río San Juan, Nagua and La Caleta, in La Romana.

Abinader stressed that the best thing about this work is that everything has been done with Apordom’s own funds, which demonstrates, as he considered, the capacity and good management of that public body since they took over the destinies of the country a year and a half ago. .

“It is time to support those who, like you, make a living with everything that the sea offers us; to you who work very early every day and who have waited for years to receive the attention you deserve, ”he said.

And he added that “that is why we are here today, to tell you that you have our support; that we will continue to fulfill what was promised because we believe in a country that grows with the effort and contribution of each one of us”.

He explained that the fishing port comes to promote the fishing activity of the Santo Domingo province, to boost the local economy, to generate new jobs and to modernize the fishing practice and the collection of its products.

The official expressed his conviction that this is a great moment for this community to continue advancing along the path of development.

“I wish you much success. Enjoy this port and continue giving us so much joy with fishing, and with the dynamism and joy of all the people of Boca Chica”, concluded the head of state.

In this sense, the executive director of Apordom, Jean Luis Rodríguez, explained that the dock received an intervention in the renovation of the jetty and the construction of concrete sidewalk, as well as renovation of fishermen’s huts, construction of new ones and He did all the painting work on sidewalks and perimeter areas.

“This that we have seen here in Bocha Chica and that we also did in Puerto Plata, we are replicating in 13 communities of the national coastal zone in the intervention of 17 docks for fishermen. We are working tirelessly, in the first stage of this plan, to impact and change the lives of more than half a million Dominican men and women who live directly and indirectly from fishing”, he pointed out.

He added that they are more committed than ever to dignifying this neglected sector, in preserving the environment and with the Dominican fishermen because you cannot live with your back to the sea.

“I reiterate that we are facing you, facing you and facing the sea. I wish great success to all the fishermen and fisherwomen of Boca Chica and that this work that we deliver today translates into a lasting benefit over time for this important and productive national activity, fishing », he indicated.

For his part, the executive director of the Dominican Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Codopesca), Carlos Then, said that they have worked hand in hand with Apordom providing all the information on the areas used by fishermen, such as the quality of the docks and the conditions of the same, with the purpose of fulfilling the commitments acquired before the nation in front of this abandoned fishing sector.

“From Codopesca we focus and create new alternatives to boost fishing and aquaculture activity through social programs such as “Pescadería de mi Barrio”, where we benefit mothers so that they can generate their daily sustenance through the sale of fish. and shellfish, being the Caleta de Boca Chica, where the pilot program for said program originated and was established,” he explained.
