Protecting and cleaning our beaches is maintaining the environmental balance
Santo Domingo, DR.- Garbage has a place, this is not exactly the beach. Today, “International Beach Cleaning Day” is commemorated, it is a good time to remind ourselves that keeping them clean is protecting future generations.
The main objective of this celebration is to create awareness and encourage citizenship a culture of responsibility and commitment towards the care of beaches, marine areas, rivers and lakes. The ecological celebration each year collects tons of waste, these are then classified as heavy and destined for recycling.
We must remember that the existence of marine debris represents a problem worldwide, which negatively impacts biodiversity, public health and the productive, recreational and tourist activities that take place on our coasts and oceans.
Although initially it was considered that the adverse impacts of plastics on the environment were only aesthetic, scientific studies indicate that marine organisms are mainly affected by ingestion of plastic and by entanglement in ropes and nets.
Every year more people join in and show extraordinary interest in participating in this important environmental cause. For Lorna Carrasco, Director of the Department of Planning and Development of MITUR and Coordinator of the National Program for Cleaning Beaches and Spas, this day is very important for everyone, because it is our responsibility to take care of the resources that God as a country gave us.
«The celebration of this day is a contribution to raise awareness about the importance of good solid waste management, it motivates a group of people to live their experience voluntarily. A special day where tons of waste are collected, “said Carrasco.
The greatest importance of this celebration lies in raising awareness and getting people to make a real commitment to the care of our beaches, which by the way are among the best in the world.
