The Tourism Ministers of the Americas meeting begins in Punta Cana

The event runs until May 9 in the heavenly destination of the Dominican Republic

The global COVID-19 pandemic has paralyzed the world and tourism has been the hardest hit of all the major economic sectors. World tourism recorded its worst year in 2020, with a 74% drop in international arrivals, according to the latest data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The global health crisis has caused the loss of millions of jobs and has put hundreds of companies at risk in the Americas region, which is highly dependent on the tourism sector.

Faced with this situation, the joint response of the sector at a global level is essential to face the devastating consequences of the pandemic and lead the sector towards the recovery of tourism throughout the world and, in particular, in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Faced with the urgency of formulating a global action plan against the pandemic, the World Tourism Organization, at the initiative and invitation of the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, has decided to hold a Meeting of Ministers of Tourism of the Americas.
