Tourism Minister presents advances in the RD Tourist Recovery Plan
Santo Domingo, RD.- The Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado, met this Monday with the board of directors and the former presidents of the National Association of Hotels and Tourism (ASONAHORES), where they analyzed details and Progress on the Responsible Tourism Recovery Plan for COVID-19 presented by President Luis Abinader last week.
The plan seeks to minimize the effects of the pandemic and promote a responsible recovery that prioritizes health, maximizes the potential for job creation and economic growth, and encourages the sector to continue developing in a sustainable way.
During the meeting, Minister Collado reported on the current status of each of the pillars of the announced plan – governance, risk management, communication and economic support to the private sector – and confirmed that everything is progressing so that each of the initiatives are found. implemented on September 15, 2020.
«We have been working on the identification and closure of each of the elements that need to be adjusted and attacked so that the plan can be developed and we also follow our work agenda with a view to strengthening our tourism offer in the medium and long term,» said the Mr. Collado.
According to the Plan, investment in promotion and financing will be 28 million dollars. The Government will also invest 7.1 million dollars in programs to guarantee air routes, through an agreement with the airlines.
The Responsible Tourism Recovery Plan also establishes fiscal easing actions, monetary measures, a guarantee fund, credit support for small and medium-sized businesses and the creation of a health insurance in charge of the State for tourists who may be affected. by COVID-19.
Among the measures with the greatest impact of the Plan, to be implemented on September 15, are the following:
· Travelers will not be asked for any type of test prior to entering the country, nor will massive tests be carried out upon arrival, but rather random tests with rapid application.
· A travel assistance plan that, in addition to emergency coverage, includes COVID-19 tests and long-stay costs will be granted temporarily, free of charge and until December 2020 to all tourists visiting a hotel.
· The Ministry has already started the process of certifying the new protocol with international best practices with Buró Veritas, a European quality expert company for the tourism sector.
· Last Friday, meetings were held with the Inter-American Development Bank, in order to give shape to the implementation of the credit risk transfer program, whose objective is to expand the sector’s portfolio with favorable conditions.
The Minister of Tourism guaranteed that he will work «shoulder to shoulder» with the private sector to achieve the full recovery of the sector that generates the most foreign exchange for the country’s economy and begin a new stage in 2021.
