WTTC: women occupy 54% of jobs generated in tourism

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC, for its acronym in English), recognized the important work of women within the Travel and Tourism sector at a global level, on the occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Day this Tuesday, March 8. March 2022.

According to figures from the Economic Impact Study produced by the Council in collaboration with Oxford Economics, 54% of the jobs generated within the industry are occupied by women. However, derived from the global health crisis due to covid-19, women were disproportionately affected through the loss of thousands of jobs they held and businesses owned by women entrepreneurs.

In this sense, Julia Simpson, president and CEO of the WTTC, assured that “travel and tourism employs a greater number of women compared to other economic sectors and this trend remains constant, although there are variations according to the different regions. ”.

“Although recent years have seen global progress in relation to gender equality, women continue to suffer from discrimination and violence. Therefore, empowerment is necessary in order for us to strengthen our capacities, thus promoting the equality necessary for our development,” she added.

It is recalled that during 2021 the Travel and Tourism sector generated more than 277 million jobs worldwide, which demonstrates the power of the industry as a tool to generate prosperity, while creating places that especially support the women, youth and other often marginalized groups in society.

Currently, the tourism scene has generated greater openness and job opportunities for women. The social changes that have taken place in recent years seek the insertion of more women in various labor and economic sectors. In this sense, tourism is considered as a way by which the population sector can achieve economic independence and at the same time Time to demonstrate your leadership skills.
