Meliá will have almost the same number of rooms in Asia as in the Caribbean

Meliá is approaching the milestone that in a short time its number of hotel rooms in Asia will be similar to that of the Caribbean, after the chain led by Gabriel Escarrer made that region a priority for its expansion.

Meliá currently has 40 hotels with 10,619 rooms on the Asian continent, all of them operated under the management formula, which represents about 12% of its global portfolio, which includes 342 hotels with 90,374 rooms.

Meliá also has agreements to open 14 more hotels with 3,873 rooms in the coming years, which will bring the total number of rooms in the Asia-Pacific region to around 15,000, very close to the 20,000 rooms it has in the Caribbean, thanks especially to its presence in Cuba, as well as in destinations such as the Riviera Maya and Punta Cana.

Meliá signed an agreement in Vietnam last year with Vinpearl, the country’s largest hotel owner, for the management of a dozen hotels, according to Expansión (Rafa Nadal and Meliá create the Zel hotel brand that will open in America).

Meliá will open new markets such as Cambodia and wants to expand into Saudi Arabia, to add to the presence it already has in China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Meliá in Thailand has partnered with Asset World Corporation (AWC), one of the country’s leading real estate groups, after having landed on the Asian continent in 1985 with the Surialaya family with a hotel in Bali, which represented its first international adventure.

Meliá created a trail in the region that is being followed by other Spanish chains such as Riu, with hotels in Sri Lanza, Maldives, Dubai and Mauritius, while analyzing projects in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as Barceló and NH (Rafa Nadal and Meliá have created the Zel hotel brand that will open in America).
